October 26,2013—Thousands of teachers across the nation gathered together in the biggest celebration dedicated to the unsung heroes of today.

PLDT-Smart Foundation spearheaded the biggest gathering of teachers in the recently concluded Gabay Guro Grand Gathering held at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. Now on its sixth year, the Gabay Guro program is the brainchild of its chairman, Chaye Cabal-Revilla, with an objective of honoring the teachers who have selflessly devoted their time and effort in teaching the children and molding them to who they are today.

This year’s celebration was attended by various celebrities and personalities from different TV networks. Among them are beauty queens Venus Raj and Shamcey Supsup; Marian Rivera, Ryza Mae Dizon, Daniel Matsunaga, Matteo Guidicelli, Rocco Nacino, John James Uy, Edward Mendez, Ogie Alcasid, Pops Fernandez, Martin Nievera, Richard Gomez, Anne Curtis, Edu Manzano, Derek Ramsay and Judy Ann Santos. Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez-Alcasid sang an inspiring tribute song, “Believing in Me”, written by husband and wife tandem Raul and Cacai Mitra.

The grand gathering was also well attended by personalities outside the showbiz industry. Gilas Pilipinas team head coach Chot Reyes also graced the program by giving his inspiring remarks to the teachers. Being a teacher himself, Reyes recognized the hard works and sacrifices of the teachers. Assistant Secretary for Education Mario A. Deriquito also gave his salutations to the objective of the event and to the teachers as well. He emphasized that teachers work hard in order to feed the minds of the children and mold them to being a better citizen of the country. “Tayo ay magiging instrumento ng pagbabago. Kung ang kabataan ang pagasa ng bayan, ang mga guro ang pag-asa ng kinabukasan ng bayan”, he added.

The highlight of the event was the awarding of brand new Foton multi-purpose L200 van and a brand new house and lot courtesy of Stateland, Inc. Annalyn from Bacoor National High School got the chance to bag the house and lot, together with Zeny Toco from Parang National High School in Marikina, who won the Foton van. Other gifts and prizes included are livelihood program packages, cash gifts, mobile phones, tablets, Smart TV, Sun Cellular retailer phone kits, and a trip to Hongkong package.

For the last six years, Gabay Guro has been consistent in being an instrument of improving the lives of the teachers across the nation. Guided and defined by its core pillars—scholarships, trainings, teacher’s tribute, housing and educational facilities, broadbanding and computerization and livelihood project, the Gabay Guro continues to change the lives of those who changed ours.
